X is for xenodochy. Not gonna lie, I had to Google this one. I learned that xenodochy means kindness or hospitality towards strangers. I'm grateful for those who don't necessarily know me, but are kind to me. For example, if someone sees me in the grocery store struggling to reach something on the top shelf, they might offer to help.
I'm also going to take this opportunity to make a public service announcement. When assisting a disabled person with a door, please do not grab the door from them without first asking if and how you can help. When I hold a door open for myself, I'm usually also using it to balance myself. If someone grabs the door, I could easily lose my balance. So, it's great to help, but it's even better when you ask if that person needs help and if the answer is yes, ask how you can help. Don't be offended if we decline your help. We're not being ungrateful. It's just that we have learned how to navigate the world independently and sometimes it's better for us if we do things the way we have learned to do them on our own.
Also, when assisting someone in a wheelchair, don't just grab their wheelchair and start pushing them. This the same thing as grabbing the person, not just the chair. Again, ask if and how you can help. That's the best thing you can do when assisting disabled individuals.
Thank you for the reminder. It's always time to love and serve your neighbor, and it's smart to know how to best do that by asking.
