Question: Have you ever attempted to repair a damaged book?

My response: No, because I've never had a book that was damaged. If I ever do have one, then I would probably try to repair it.

In honor of the new Hannah Swensen mystery that will premiere on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries tonight, I'm taking it back to where it all begin with Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Mystery 1), by Joanne Fluke. This book was first published 23 years ago and the long-running series is still ongoing today, with another one set to be published this year. The movie series, based on the books, began in 2015. It's been a couple years since another one has been made, but the seventh one finally airs tonight. This series is so special to me. You can read more about that here.

Here is the first sentence in Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder:
Hannah Swensen slipped into the old leather bomber jacket that she'd rescued from Helping Hands thrift store and reached down to pick up the huge orange tomcat that was rubbing against her ankles.

And here's an excerpt from page 56 in the paperback format:
Hannah should have guessed that Luanne would be too proud to accept an outright gift. But there were ways around pride and as she stared at the table, Hannah had an idea.

Almost the entire first page is about Hannah's cat, Moishe. I remember reading this page for the first time a couple years ago (yes, it took me that long to discover this series) and feeling the excitement that there was a cat in this book. Little did I come to realize that cats are very common in cozies. But this was the beginning for me and it pulled me right in. We also learn from the first sentence about Hannah's sense of style.

Looking back now on the excerpt from page 56, I see that we have an early indication about how Hannah has a gift for finding out information about people or convincing them to do something. This gift of hers is only used for good. I don't think that thought crossed my mind the first time I read this page. However, now that I've read 17 books in the series so far, it's clear to me that this was one way of showing Hannah's personality and the way she thinks.

  1. It's been years since I read this book (I started the series when it started), but reading these excerpts made me smile. I really did love the early books in the series.

  3. You know if someone is still writing a series many years later, it's got to be good.

Fiona, you do a wonderful job keeping your glove pristine and white.

Thank you for joining Feline Friday!

  4. I got my mom hooked on Joanne Fluke's series years ago and she's enjoyed watching the mystery series as well. It's not one I've ever been able to watch because we subscribe to the channels they air, sadly. I do love a cat in a cozy mystery! Those are great excerpts.

    Fiona looks so comfortable!

I hope you have a great weekend!

    1. If you want to watch those movies, they are available on DVD (all except the most recent one, of course). That's how I watched them for the first time. I borrowed the DVD's from the library. :)

  5. Fiona is quite lovely. Such a pose. I have repaired many books in my role as a librarian. Some I did very well, others just to keep the book useful.
