Five for Friday - Memoirs, Fritters, and Torbies

Happy Friday, friends!

I'm once again participating in five blog hops today. You can click on the host links below to read the blogs of others who are participating in each blog hop. If you're a blogger, feel free to join through their links!

Since I participate in five blog hops on Fridays, I've renamed my Friday posts Five for Friday. The content will be the same as what I've been posting on Fridays.

QuestionDo you enjoy reading memoirs?

My response: Occasionally. I read Riva Lehrer's memoir as part of a book club. In fact, Golem Girl was the first book I finished this year (carried over from December of last year). It isn't a book I would have chosen to read on my own, as the subject matter is very heavy. However, I'm glad I did read it. I also read Judy Heumann's memoir for a book club. I had been wanting to read Being Heumann, so I'm glad the book club finally motivated me to do so. One memoir I read on my own that wasn't part of a book club was Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, by Matthew Perry. I'm a huge fan of Friends. I have it on blu-ray and watch about five episodes a week. Apart from the constant cursing, I thought it was a really well-written memoir.

Today's excerpts are from the e-book format of Survival of the Fritters (Deputy Donut Mystery 1), by Ginger Bolton.

Here are the first few sentences:
Tom stopped coating hot apple fritters in that tantalizing mixture of cinnamon and sugar. He stared over the half wall separating Deputy Donut's kitchen from our dining area. "One of our regulars is missing."
And here's an excerpt from page 56 in the Hoopla e-book format. This format has 603 pages on my phone, just so you get an idea of how far into the book page 56 is. With over 600 pages, it's pretty early in the book. Yet it's referencing something significant.
"Me, too. And I'm sorry. I also picked up two stale donuts that were lying on the floor, and then when I saw the doll, I just let them go. I don't know where they ended up."

Do these excerpts make you want to read more, or have you read this book already? I am planning to post my review next week.

In Survival of the Fritters, there is a cat who is a torbie (pictured on the cover). A torbie is a mix of tabby and tortie. I've been told my Bell is a dilute tortie, but after learning about the torbie, I am thinking she might be a dilute torbie.

  1. I often find that memoirs and nonfiction books are more interesting to me than fiction. I learn something new every time.

    1. Anne, I used to read only non-fiction books for that reason (to learn something new), and while I still do sometimes, I mostly prefer an escape in fictional towns these days. Interestingly, fiction can teach us a lot too. :)

    1. Kym, I'm allergic to apples, otherwise I would be too! The book did make me crave donuts, though! :)

  5. I thought the same for Matthew Perry's memoir. Nice first lines, I hope you enjoy it. Have a great weekend!

  6. The books you review always sound intriguing, i wish i had more free reading time.

Bell could be considered a dilute torbie, as some tabbies do have the spotted pattern similar to hers.

Thank you so much for joining Feline Friday!
