Happy Purple Friday!
That's what we Ravens fans say the Friday before a Ravens game. Let the playoffs begin!
Anyway...
Today I'm participating in five blog hops that have nothing to do with football. You can click on the host links below to read the blogs of others who are participating in each blog hop. If you're a blogger, feel free to join through their links!
Question: Have you ever loved a book that everyone else hated or hated a book everyone else loved?
My response: I think "hate" is too strong of a word to describe my feelings, but yes, there have been books that most people seemed to love, while I didn't enjoy them. One example is The Matzah Ball, by Jean Meltzer. You can read my review here.
Today's excerpts are from the Kindle format of Pride, Prejudice, and Poison (Jane Austen Society Mystery 1), by Elizabeth Blake.
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a husband," whispered Farnsworth Appleby.
And here's an excerpt from page 56:
"No, but I know why you're asking. The sugar would hide any bitterness from the poison. And arsenic is a white powder that could easily masquerade as sugar."
Hemming's eyes narrowed. "And how exactly did you know it was arsenic?"
There are a lot of references to Pride and Prejudice in this book, as evidenced by the first line. In the excerpt from page 56, our amateur sleuth, Erin Coleridge, is speaking with the Detective when he interviews her after the body was found. Crime is a hobby of hers, and it shows in this conversation. You'll have to read it to find out exactly how she knew that it was arsenic. I'm hoping to finish this book next week, and when I do, I'll post a review.
The girls enjoyed looking at the snow we had today! (So did I.) In my part of Central Maryland, we got about 6 or 7 inches from this storm - more than we've had in a couple of years.
The girls look fascinated by the snow!
ReplyDeleteYes, they loved it! :)
DeleteI haven't read The Matzah Ball, but I think your review is very thorough and well thought out.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bonnie. :-)
DeleteI haven't read The Matzah Ball, by Jean Meltzer, but I read Kissing Kosher by Jean Meltzer and enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteNice answer.
Hope you had a good week.
Thanks, Elizabeth. Maybe I will look into some of her other books and read the reviews (and especially content warnings) to find out if I might like those more. :)
DeleteHope you find one you like.
DeleteHappy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteI’m currently reading Sadie and the Bad Boy Billionaire by Emma St. Clair and Jenny Proctor. It’s super cute!
“I don’t want to be impressed with Benedict’s boat. Yacht. I don’t want to be impressed with his yacht. But honestly, this thing is gorgeous.”
I hope you have a great weekend full of fun reading time! π
Nicole, those are two authors I definitely want to read! Thank you. You too! :)
DeleteThe book sounds really good. I didn't have that cozy on my list, but I'll add it. The girls are so cute and very interested in the snow.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it when you read it, Yvonne! The girls thank you. :-)
DeleteI love both quotes for different reasons. The first for it's nod to the original. The Friday56 for the question "How did you know it was arsenic?
ReplyDeleteYep, those are good ones! :)
DeleteI haven't read The Matzah Ball. But there have been books I haven't cared for that others seem to have loved. I bet I would love Pride, Prejudice, and Poison. It sounds like my kind of cozy mystery! I hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you! You too! :-)
DeleteWhen it comes to books, everyone has certain tastes and they don't always agree.
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds interesting. Every time I hear about arsenic, I think of Lady Aster and Winston Churchill. She told him, "If you were my husband, I would put arsenic in your tea." He replied, "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it!" Something like that.
I don't blame you and the cats for being fascinated with snow. We get very little of it down here and it mesmerizes us. Thank you for linking up with Feline Friday!
So very true on different tastes. Interesting quote, and very relevant to the book! :)
