Five for Friday - Comforting Books, A Tragic Train Trip, and Fiona on Higher Ground

Happy Friday!

Today I'm participating in five blog hops. You can click on the host links below to read the blogs of others who are participating in each blog hop. If you're a blogger, feel free to join through their links.

Question: May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Are there any books with themes or characters dealing with issues related to mental health that you have found to be enlightening or comforting?

My response: There is a scene in #TagMe for Murder (Trending Topic Mystery 2), by Sarah E. Burr, that touched me deeply when I read it. I read primarily cozy mysteries, and in these series, the amateur sleuths discover a lot of dead bodies. Needless to say, this can really take its toll on the main character. Coco's mental health is beautifully addressed in this scene.

Today's excerpts are from the e-book format of The Man in Lower Ten, by Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Here is the beginning:
McKnight is gradually taking over the criminal side of the business, which I never liked, especially since the strange case of the man in berth lower ten, which made me uneasy.

And here is an excerpt from 56%:
The woman across from me showed no haste to leave, lingering over a demitasse, and then sitting with her elbow on the table and her chin in her hand. She observed the room with an air of solemnity, her dark eyes shifting over the changing groups.

This is the Modern Reader Edition of a book that was originally published in 1909. It released on April 30th and I was asked by the publisher to read and review. I am planning to post my review next week, so stay tuned!

Why sit on the window seat that's specifically designed for cats when you can go higher?

  1. I think the Mary Roberts Rinehart book will be an interesting read. I love reading older classic books.

    1. Deb, I tend to struggle with classics, as they take me longer to read, but I do enjoy them. :)

  2. So the book was originally published in 1909? How has it stood the test of time. I somethings find when I read classics that the books just can't make the leap to our century.

    1. Anne, that's exactly why the Modern Reader Edition was just recently published. The original story was preserved, but it's been updated to be more contemporary and easier to read. :)

  3. Happy Friday!
I'm currently finishing up Love's Winding Road by Susan F. Craft. It's a pretty adventurous story!
"Her heart pounded as visions of Daniel danced through her mind."
I hope you have an excellent weekend with LOTS of fun reading time!

  4. The first bestseller detective novel, I wonder how the genre has changed since then.

Of course, you have to go higher! Thank you for linking up with Feline Friday!

    1. "Why not go higher?", says Fiona. She'd go even higher if she could. :-)
