The Friday Six 12

Happy Friday!

It's been a while! I'm glad to be back.

Today I'm participating in six blog hops.  You can click on the host links below to find the blogs of others who are participating in each blog hop. If you're a blogger, feel free to join through the host links.

Question: September is a busy month for literary events and book awards. Are there any award-winning books or authors you're eager to read or any forthcoming book events you intend to go to or cover on your blog?

My response: There are a few ARCs I have lined up to read. Some of the authors have won awards, while others haven't yet (at least not that I know of). I won't be attending any bookish events in September or October, but in November my local chapter of Sisters in Crime will be hosting their annual Author Extravaganza at my local library. I am definitely planning to go again this year and I will write about it on my blog.

Today's excerpts are from the e-ARC format of Panic in the Panhandle (Elmo Simpson Mystery 1), by J.C. Kenney.

Here is the beginning:
The second I saw the arm protruding from the mouth of the alligator, I knew it was going to be one of those days.

And here is an excerpt from 56%:
"The story goes that he got food poisoning from something he ate here. Supposedly, he chose to blackmail you with a threat to go public and ruin the restaurant if you didn't pay him." I took a drink of my champagne to let the words sink in. "Anyway, wanted you to know."

You can get an idea of the tone of this book from that first line. It dives right into the mystery, and the entire book (as far as I've read) is filled with humor. The protagonist doesn't do anything over-the top funny. Rather, the laugh-out-loud moments come mostly from the thoughts that go on inside his head and how he narrates what is happening.

In the 56% excerpt, Elmo, the protagonist, is confronting a suspect about something he overheard. And he does this while on a dinner date (much to his date's surprise). How do you think his date will react when she realizes what Elmo is doing here? Do you think the rumor is true? If so, what does it have to do with mystery? You'll have to read to find out!

This book releases next Thursday, September 26th, which is when I'll publish my review. I hope you'll stop by again and read it.

Bell often lies like this, flexing her hind toes. I suppose it's comfortable.

This is a fire rainbow that I saw yesterday evening. I was so happy when I saw it because I had heard there was a rainbow in the morning that I didn't see. The fire rainbow made up for it.

  1. Yes, if I saw an arm in the mouth of an alligator it would be "one of those days." Ha!

  2. Panic in the Panhandle looks good. I'll have to look for that one. Living in Florida, I always think about alligators. Bell looks cute.

  4. Cats get into some strange positions, but wouldn't do it if not comfortable. I saw a strange rainbow about a week ago. Instead of being an arc in the sky it was laid along the top of a long flat hill, crossed the river and ended up on a wooded area. It was starting to fade as I watched it. I should have gone out as soon as I saw it and taken a photo.

  10. Stay away from alligators! Most of us who are from swampy areas know it. Of course, there's always some hot shot...

    Anyway,

  11. How did that happen? My first comment was only just starting!

The story sounds quite fun and funny, the fire rainbow is beautiful, and yes, Bell is comfortable. Cats are always comfortable, and if they are not, they move!

Thank you for linking up with Feline Friday!
