Sunday Post 12

Happy New Year, friends! I hope you all enjoyed the holiday season and you're ready for a shiny new year! I'm happy to be taking the 2023 journey with you!

I accomplished my reading goals in 2022. My original Goodreads goal was to read 40 books, which I sort of achieved. I realized six of those were audiobooks that I listened to and I really wanted to actually "read" 40 books, so I increased my goal it to 50 books. I ended the year with 52 books, so mission accomplished. On Goodreads, I also participated in a cozy mystery challenge, where I had to read cozies in ten different themes. I was down to the wire on that one, but I did finish it.

I am all set up for my 2023 reading goals, which I will update monthly on my blog. I've created a page just for 2023 Reading Challenges, which you can find by clicking on the link on the right sidebar. The first two challenges are similar, as they both involve reading cozy mysteries. One of the reasons I like challenges is because they connect me with other people who are on similar journeys.

Today I am linking with Reading Reality, who hosts Stacking the Shelves and The Book Date, who hosts It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (This is posted on Mondays, so be sure to check the link then.)  On their blogs you will be able to see links to the posts from others who are participating in these blog hops, and if you're a blogger you can join too!

I finished reading Read and Gone (Haunted Library Mysteries 2), by Allison Brook over the holidays. It was a great Christmas-themed cozy mystery and I will review it on my blog soon. In the meantime, you can read my review of Death Overdue (Haunted Libary Mysteries 1) here.

I am still reading this non-fiction book, Golem Girl: A Memoir by Riva Lehrer. I am planning to finish it this week. I'm reading it for a book club, which meets next week, and I want to have time to think about the questions related to it. Riva Lehrer is an artist who was born with spina bifida, which is the same birth defect I was born with. It is a very insightful memoir.

The next book I will start reading this week is The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, by Michelle Obama. So far I just skimmed the intro., but it seems like a book I will really enjoy.

I will not be starting any new cozy mystery books until next weekend, so in the meantime I'll continue reading the short stories in The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle. This is one of my slow and steady reads for the year (and probably for next year as well).

Since I read a children's book last week, I am also linking with Unleashing Readers, who hosts the younger readers version of It's Monday! What are you reading?

I read Snow in Jerusalem, by Deborah de Costa when I first received it years ago and I read it again to end 2022. It's a heart-warming story about two boys, one Muslim and one Jewish, who meet and bond as a result of unknowingly caring for the same stray cat.

I am also participating in another blog hop today - Sunday Post, hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer. With this blog hop, I'll recap what I've posted over the couple of weeks. If you missed a post you want to read, just click on the link below. There are only two posts since my last Sunday Post.
As for what I'm watching, I am going to continue with Hallmark Christmas movies through the first week of January or a little longer, then I'll start watching other movies, including more Hallmark cozy mystery movies. I have a lot of catching up to do with those. I'm going to start something new on my blog. At end of each month I will recap all of the movies I watched that month.

I am planning to resume my regular blogging schedule this week, so I hope to see you around. Have a great week and an amazing new year!

  5. I wish I had time for more 'cozy' mysteries but do read a few once in a while, have bookmarked Read and Gone. And thanks for Snow in Jerusalem, a new title to me. Happy New Year!

  6. Nice looking assortment of books. I don't sign up for challenges except for Goodreads because I don't like having to remember to meet the requirements. I find that I do read a lot of cozies each year though. I'm a big fan of audiobooks too. Come see my week here. Happy reading and Happy New Year!

    1. Kathy, I have not listened to too many audiobooks, but I'm thinking of weaving more of them into my reading this year. Mostly I prefer print books, though. The two challenges, other than the main Goodreads one, are pretty minimal. Plus I also read a lot of cozies, so I guess they won't really be much of a challenge. I do enjoy connecting with other people who read similar books, though (as well as others). :-)

    1. Nya, we're all at different places. Not too long ago I struggled to read 12 books in a year. Good luck with your goals! :-)

  9. Happy new year. When I first moved to Portland, I got the Sherlock Holmes omnibus and I took my time with it as I got settled into my new place.

    1. Thank you, Earl. It is a good slow and steady read, especially when I just finished a cozy book and haven't started another one yet. Happy New Year to you as well! :-)

  10. To my mind audiobooks are books to be counted! I love the Haunted Library series. The Light We Carry is on my listening list as MO is such a good speaker.

    1. Kathryn, I count audiobooks also. It's just that since listening and reading are two different ways of experiencing a book, I count them separately. :-)

  12. I'm still contemplating my reading goals for this year. I am a hard core cosy mystery fan. These days I am making my way through the Lane Winslow series by Iona Whishaw. I like that it is Canadian, and set in a part of my province that I am acquainted with. If you haven't heard of them, I encourage you to try them out. I've been listening to them as I work on other projects.
    Happy New Year!

    1. Cheriee, Happy New Year! Thank you for the recommendation. I have never read a cozy set in Canada, so that would be a nice change for me. :-)
