Grilling Season is the second installment in the Curious Caterer series, which premiered in February of this year. Dying for Chocolate was the first in the movies series, which premiered in 2022. The movies are loosely based on the Goldy Schulz book series, by Diane Mott Davidson, which I have not read.
In Grilling Season, Goldy Berry (Nikki DeLoach) caters a party for her ex-husband's partner, Susie, (Amanda May). Susie was also one of Goldy's high school classmates. Tragedy strikes when the grill Goldy used for the party explodes and has fatal consequences. What first appears to be an accident turns into a murder investigation, in which Goldy's ex-husband, Richard (Lochlyn Munro) is a prime suspect. Goldy believes he is innocent, so she sets out to find out who really killed her friend.
This was a fun second installment in the ongoing series. The mystery is strong and there are a handful of suspects to consider. I had a hunch who the culprit was, but I wasn't completely sure until it was revealed. The big reveal was edge-of-your seat suspenseful. Of all the mysteries I've seen, this is one of Hallmark's most jarring reveals.
This entire cast is strong. I have enjoyed watching all of the secondary characters. And of course, since this is Hallmark, there is a romance brewing. It is a slow burn between Goldy and Detective Tom Schultz (Andrew Walker). I like that the romance does not overpower the mystery and they are taking their time. The chemistry between them is certainly there and I believe in due time, we will see their relationship grow.
I hope this series continues for a long time. Thankfully, the wait is almost over for the next one. I'm looking forward to watching the third installment in the Curious Caterer series, Fatal Vows, which at the time of this writing, I can say premieres tonight!
It's nice to hear a story about a person who is able to get along with an ex.
ReplyDeleteI agree! Especially since they have a child together. :)
