I have been wanting to read more romance books and specifically, I've been wanting to read several books written by Leah Dobrinska. So in December when I found out the prequel novella. Choosing Love (Mapleton 0.5), was free on Kindle at the time and that it takes place around New Year's Day, I did not hesitate to grab it and read it over the New Year's weekend.
Kristy Vos is in control of her life and that's the way she likes it. However, when she runs into her brother's best friend, Ashton, at a New Year's Eve wedding after not seeing him for years, things change. Their mutual attraction for each other is instant and they grow closer over the next couple of weeks.
Ashton is in the military and he is scheduled to be deployed in two weeks. Will Kristy and Ashton go their separate ways in order to avoid heartbreak or will they take a chance on love? Kristy's brother has his say in the matter too. Do they follow his advice?
I loved everything about this novella! One of my favorite romance tropes is when childhood friends reconnect and find love with each other as adults. In this case, Ashton is Kristy's brother's best friend, but Kristy and Ashton knew each other.
It is told from two alternating different points of view. This is not just Kristy's story and it isn't just Ashton's story. It's their story. This way, we are better able to understand the feelings of both characters. It moves at a comfortable pace as Kristy and Ashton's relationship progresses. The conflict is realistic and compelling. I was fully invested in what was happening and I genuinely wanted to know if and how they would make their relationship work.
What I wasn't really expecting were the range of emotions that would be covered. There are laugh-out-loud moments and one scene felt so emotional that I shed some tears as I read it. Rarely does a book so deeply affect me.
I really appreciate that there is no bad language in this novella. It was a cozy read. If you enjoy sweet, clean, contemporary romances, I highly recommend Choosing Love, by Leah Dobrinska. Be prepared to experience a wide range of emotions. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the Mapleton series.
Choosing to get in a relationship with someone who will be gone so much is a big deal.
