Sunday Post 19

Happy Sunday and Happy National Fairy Tale Day, friends!

I recently found out about some fairy tale books that show disability representation, so I can't wait to look into those.

What is your favorite fairy tale? I think mine is Cinderella. I love all the different versions of it. My favorite movie version is the one with Whitney Houston as the fairy godmother. When I taught second grade, my favorite unit to teach was Cinderella. I had no idea until then that so many different book versions existed! I love so many of them, but one of my absolute favorites is Cindy Ellen: A Wild Western Cinderella, written by Susan Lowell and illustrated by Jane Manning. It is such a fun version!

I can't believe I haven't done a Sunday post since Super Bowl Sunday! I've had a lot going on over the past couple of weeks, but it's time to get back on track with blogging.

Today I am once again linking with Reading Reality, who hosts Stacking the Shelves and The Book Date, who hosts It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (This is posted on Mondays, so be sure to check the link then.)  On their blogs you will be able to see links to the posts from others who are participating in these blog hops, and if you're a blogger you can join too!

RECENTLY FINISHED
Survival of the Fritters (Deputy Donut Mystery 1), by Ginger Bolton, is the most recent cozy mystery I read. I gave it four out of five stars and will most likely continue the series.
During Valentine week I listened to Sweeter Than Chocolate, written by Lizzie Shane and narrated by Brittany Pressley. I gave it four out of five stars. This is a rare occasion where I enjoyed the movie more than the book (although the book wasn't bad either).
I have been wanting to read Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, by Matthew Perry, since I heard that he was writing this book. I got on the waiting list at the library and I was finally able to read it last week. I gave it four out of five stars on Goodreads. There is A LOT of cursing in it, which I could deal with in the beginning, but then it just got to be too much for my taste. Also, at times I got confused about when certain events in his life happened. As memoirs often go, it isn't completely written in chronological order and it wasn't always clear to me when things were happening.

However, the content in this book is extraordinarily powerful and deeply moving. It was most definitely a page-turner and most importantly, I came away with a better understanding of what addiction is like for those who experience it. I read this book wanting to know more about one of the actors on my all-time favorite t.v. show and I came away with so much more. I have more respect for Matthew Perry than I ever thought I could and I sincerely wish him well. If you're on the fence about reading this book, go for it. Just know that there is a ton of cursing in it, as well as issues, such as addiction, that could be a trigger for some people. To balance it out, there is some laugh-out-loud humor in it with jokes that only "Chandler Bing" could successfully pull off. Above all, though, I think this book could help a lot of people who are going through addiction, while educating others.

CURRENTLY READING
I may try to finish reading the e-book version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by J.K. Rowling, this week, but at the very least, I'll read chapters 12 and 13. I am enjoying it, but I've been reading it for a while and I want to finish it.
The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, by Michelle Obama, is another one I have been reading for a while and I want to finish soon.
UP NEXT
Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist
, by Judith Heumann with Krisen Joiner, is a book club pick for March. I have been wanting to read this since 2020 when it was published (in fact, just yesterday is the three-year anniversary of it's publication!), so I'm excited to get started with it. She is pretty much the queen of disability rights activism and we would not be as far along as we are without her. She was in the documentary Crip Camp, which is a Netflix original, but is also available for free on YouTube. If you want to learn more about the history of disability rights, I highly recommend watching this film. This isn't a topic that is taught in school (at least not when I was a student or a teacher), but it should be because it's an important part of American history.

I am also participating in another blog hop today - Sunday Post, hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer. With this blog hop, I'll recap what I've recently posted. If you missed a post you want to read, just click on the link below.
As for television highlights, I'm still watching and enjoying The Way Home. I am also trying to finish Season 2 of Murder, She Wrote. I first started watching this on the free version of Peacock. Then it moved to the premium version of the network. So I chased it onto the Roku Channel where I could once again watch it for free. However, it's no longer on the Roku Channel (sigh...), so I looked it up online to see where I could watch it for free. From this, I discovered a new-to-me streaming service, Freevee. It is streaming for free on this channel and I hope it stays there! Every time it switches channels, I have to figure out which episode I last watched because sometimes a lot of time passes between when I watch each one. I'm thinking of writing it down in case I have to go through this again. Anyway, I only have a few more episodes left to watch in Season 2.

On Hallmark, in addition to The Way Home, I have been watching all of the premiere movies, plus some other ones I had never seen before. I finally caught up on all of the new mysteries that aired last year. Yesterday I recorded Made for Each Other and tonight I will record A Nashville Legacy. I will watch both of these this week.

Did you see any of the movies or read or listen to any of the books I mentioned? If so, what are your thoughts on them? And don't forget to tell me your favorite fairy tale, too, if you have one!

  1. I had no idea it was National Fairy Tale Day! My favorite fairytale is probably Cinderella, but it changes a lot. I still haven't decided about reading the Matthew Perry book, but since you said there's a lot of cursing I might pass it by. 1. I understand. If someone had told me there was that much cursing in it, I probably would not have even opened the book. However, I'm glad I did. I learned so much from it and, despite the excessive cursing, I developed a deeper respect for him. Have a great week! :-)

  3. I enjoyed learning more about Matthew Perry as well. Like you, I do have a deep respect for him and what he went through. The cursing got on my last nerve, it was excessive and unnecessary. I felt like some parts were TMI but overall a good read.

    1. Greg, yes it is! I do find that a lot of the free services don't have the movies and t.v. shows I want to watch, so this was a pleasant surprise. I just hope Murder, She Wrote stays put this time! It's like Jessica Fletcher herself...the show travels a lot (to different streaming services). Lol. :-)

  5. Cinderella is my favorite, also. There are versions in so many different cultures, it's fun to compare.

  6. I think Cinderella would be my favorite fairy tale, too. I read Survival of the Fritters awhile ago and enjoyed it. That's another series I have to catch up on. Hope you have a great week!

  7. I don't think I have a favorite fairy tale, it's something I've never thought about. I've head from others that the Matthew Perry book has a lot of cursing in it. I might listen to it later in the year.

    1. Wendy, I think I heard Matthew Perry himself narrates the audiobook. I always like when the author narrates it. Minus the excessive cursing, it's a good book. Have a great week! :-)
