The seventh installment in the Murder, She Baked/Hannah Swensen series premieres next Friday, May 19th, on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries at 7pm eastern time. In anticipation of the new movie, today I am sharing my review of the sixth installment, Sweet Revenge: A Hannah Swensen Mystery.
Sweet Revenge is based on the book, Cream Puff Murder, by Joanne Fluke. The movie revolves around a murder that has taken place at a 24-hour gym that Hannah has joined and she once again feels compelled to assist the authorities in solving this heinous crime. Being Hallmark, it of course does also involve a romantic subplot, which has been ongoing throughout the series. In addition to this, there is another entertaining subplot involving Delores, Hannah's mother.
This sixth movie in the series had a new director and it is the first one that was renamed A Hannah Swensen Mystery instead of Murder, She Baked. Even the music at the start of the movie is different. They wanted to slightly rebrand, while still keeping with the general cozy feel of the series. I have to say, their efforts were mostly successful. Before writing this review, I re-watched it. (The first time I watched it was several months after it was first released.) I thought I remembered this being my least favorite in the series. However, after watching it again, it occurred to me how much I really enjoyed it.
Most of the same main characters were present in this movie, except for the sheriff and his wife, Andrea, who is Hannah's sister. Andrea added a spunky flair to the movies and I really missed her presence in this one. However, some new characters were added and I enjoyed watching all of them. Most significantly, Hannah's younger sister, Michelle, is in this movie. She has been in a lot of the books, so I was already familiar with her character. Her personality in the movie mirrored her character in the book fairly well, though something still felt a little off with her.
I was already excited for the new movie that will premiere next week, but after re-watching the sixth movie and reviewing it, I am even more excited for another Hannah Swensen Mystery. Hallmark has been releasing new mystery series, but this is the first one in a while that's part of an older series. And it happens to be my favorite!
How do you feel about Hallmark mysteries? Do you have a favorite?
