Sunday Post 43

Hello, friends!

On these blogs you will be able to see links to the posts from others who are participating in these blog hops, and if you're a blogger, you can join too.

Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions on e-readers and on websites where I can easily search for free e-books or subscribe to emails. I'm going to use the Kobo and Kindle apps on my phone for now to get a better feel for which service I like better. Closer to the holiday season, when I might find deals, I'll settle on an e-reader. Right now, it seems like the selection of free books is better on Kindle (at least for my preferences), but I'll give it some time.

We finally had some days with lower temps and lower humidity last week, so I was able to get out for morning walks a few days. Early morning, when I can get up and moving early enough, is my favorite time of day to walk. In fact, if I don't take a walk in the morning, it doesn't get done at all. That's my number one way I prefer to exercise, but when that's' not possible, I have my hand cycle for back-up. I have also been lifting my weights a couple days a week. In addition to this, I participate in a Zumba class that is taught virtually by a wheelchair user in a different state.

What is your favorite way and time of day to exercise?

RECENTLY FINISHED
🍄🍄🍄🍄
I thought Death on Cozumel Island (Claire O'Keefe Mystery 1), by Cindy Quayle, was going to take me another few days to finish. However, once I got to the 60% mark, I was so anxious to find out what happened that I breezed through the last 40% in one day. I am planning to share my review this week, most likely on Tuesday or Wednesday. In the meantime, you can read some excerpts from this book by clicking here.
IN PROGRESS
The Firefly Jar
(Crickley Creek 1), by Laurie Beach, will be my main focus for reading this week.  I'm a little more than halfway done and I hope to finish it by mid-week. To find out a little more about this book and read some excerpts from it, click here.
I started listening to A Killer Plot (Books by the Bay Mystery 1), by Ellery Adams. This book has an uphill battle to climb with me because I'm already not a fan of the main character. There's a scene where she parks in an accessible parking space when she doesn't need it and she doesn't seem to care. This is a personal issue for me because I need those accessible parking spaces, as do many of my friends. It bothers me even in fiction. I'll see it through and hope I start to like the main character more.

UP NEXT
I have been reading the Haunted Library Mysteries, by Allison Brook, since book 1. I started reading them last year and I've been reading each one in the season in which they take place. Death on the Shelf  is set in the summer, so that's next on my list to read. My goal is to catch up with the series before the 7th (and I think final) one is released later this year. I'm almost there. Death on the Shelf is the 5th installment.
I'm not certain yet, but I might start reading Bewitching (Regency Magic 1), by Jill Barnett, this week. I love the cover and the premise sounds like something I might enjoy. It's one of the freebies I recently acquired on Kindle. This is a historical paranormal romance. I'm thinking it could be like Pride and Prejudice with a humorous and magical twist.
ON TELEVISON
  • Hallmark Summer Nights - Hallmark is in Summer Nights mode, which is Summer Days for me. I've been watching the premieres, as always, along with some of the older summer-themed movies. I'll share more in my monthly movie recap in a few weeks.
  • Friends - That's a wrap on Season 1! This first season has a clear focus on the beginning of the Ross and Rachel saga. However, I think my favorite episode from this season is The One with Two Parts. I like this two-part episode because it focuses on the friendship between Phoebe (my favorite main character) and Joey. I just love their friendship throughout the series.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - I finally watched this Marvel movie since it started streaming on Disney+. I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I thought this was really well-done. The overall plot and the way it was executed was good. It's also visually appealing. However, at the same time, I also found it very disturbing. Because of that, I can't see myself ever watching it again. I won't share any spoilers, so I'll just leave it at that. Have you seen it? If so, what did you think? (Don't read the comments below if you don't want to read spoilers because there may be some there.)

Wishing you a wonderful week!

  1. I love Friends and have binged it many times, LOL! I am the same as you, if I don't get a workout done in the morning, I will not do it. I prefer to walk, but I also have a DVD that I like. This past Friday I started weight training with a lady who is doing 4 ladies at a time, when no one else is around, perfect for this introvert/don't like to workout in front of people, person! Have a great week!

    1. Cindy, I don't mind working out with other people. My biggest challenge is committing to the time. I like to be able to function on my own time. Having set class times for in-person yoga and Zumba not long after I retired on disability (and for several years after that) worked well when I was trying to establish a new routine. Nowadays, I just prefer to take my time. :-)

  2. Mornings work best for me too. I always think I'll walk at night and then I don't. And I need to watch Guardians although I've been hearing that and I'm a little nervous :)

    1. Greg, I hadn't heard anything about Guardians 3 before I watched it, so I was very surprised when I saw what it was all about. I'm interested in finding out what you think after you watch it. :-)

  3. I think adding the apps to your phone first is a great way to try out the services. Our library allows us to check out twenty Kindle books at a time, so that's nice, too.

My favorite way to exercise in the summer is swimming. I will be sad when that stops, though they are talking about extending the classes through October.

    1. Deb, it is nice to have the option to check out e-books from the library. I do that, too, on my phone using Libby and Hoopla. :)

  4. I would like to start walking in the mornings before I have to start work on the days I'm working from home. Unfortunately that means walking in the dark half the year, but it would likely work out for the best schedule wise. I just need to get to bed at a decent hour, which is a challenge with my family's schedules. I don't have time to squeeze in exercise otherwise, so I need to make it work.

Death on Cozumel Island sounds really good! I am glad you enjoyed it. I want to read A Killer Plot. That is really annoying about the main character parking in a accessible parking space. That is really not okay. Death on the Shelf is for sure on my list to read. I really enjoy that series.

I hope you have a great week and happy reading!

    1. It is a greater challenge when you work and have to work around everyone else's schedule. Yeah, I'm all for disability representation, but not like that! Thanks and I hope have a great week too! :-)

  5. I'd prefer morning exercise, but I have to be at work so early there's no time. It's getting to be a problem I'm not sure how to solve.

    1. It's definitely a challenge to try to fit it in. I hope you find a way to make it work. Have a great week. :)

  6. I like Ellery Adams books but I am with you about the parking in a disability spot. I like the Haunted Library series too. And like you if I don't get in a morning walk its unlikely to happen.

    1. Kathryn, I'm hoping I grow to like the main character more as the book progresses. :)

  7. I am not a morning person, so working out in the morning just doesn't happen. About a year and a half ago, I started doing my runs at lunch time - a definite advantage of working from home. However, now that it's too hot to do that, I do any working out I am going to do as soon as I log out of work for the day. Otherwise, it doesn't happen.

    1. Mark, when I first retired on disability in 2010, I was a night owl. I made it a habit to go to bed at 4 a.m. and wake up around 11 a.m. That lasted about a year, then I gradually started to change my hours. Then I started to wake up at 4 a.m. Lol. It was a complete turnaround. Nowadays, I don't get up that early anymore, but I'm still very much a morning person. :)

  8. Yes! I posted a few weeks ago how much Guardians 3 traumatized me and my husband. I liked the movie a lot and it was a good wrap up to the trilogy but I bawled me eyes out due to what I am assuming is the same thing you are referencing and I don't think that's supposed to happen with a Marvel movie. Glad I didn't have any small kids watching with me. I love cozy mysteries but don't get much of an opportunity to read them because I read all kinds of genres. I need to work one in soon. Have you tried the Shady Hollow series?

    1. Barb, yep. My thoughts exactly on Guardians 3. I listened to the first in the Shady Hollow series and I really enjoyed it. I'm planning to listen to the rest of the series if I can borrow them from the library through Hoopla or Libby. I'm not usually a huge fan of audiobooks, but this one is especially good on audio. :)

  9. I have a disability so it's hard for me to walk, but I would love to hear more the wheelchair user who teaches Zumba. Have a beautiful day, Meezan ☕🌞📚💛

  10. I’m sort of dreading watching Guardians 3 because I’m aware of the spoiler.
Bewitching sounds like it will be charming, I hope you enjoy it

Wishing you a happy reading week
